This is the home page for my Philosophy 121 students.
The title 'Modern Philosophy' can be somewhat misleading. In this context 'modern' means 'everything since the middle ages' - which doesn't seem very modern at all. We study modern philosophy in order to understand the thinking that has framed the present day world and the debates that rage to this day.
There is a common phrase, "everyone knows" that is alsmost always wrong. In this class we'll learn how everyone came to "know" certain things and we'll try to distinguish the bits our intellectual ancestors got right from the bits they got wrong.
